I'm probably too late for Sherrie, but for others - you should not get A US Passport Card instead of a Passport Book if you live in Australia. The card is primarily for travel to Canada, Mexico and the Carribean.
from http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html
"The passport card will facilitate entry and expedite document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air."
cheers
