it all depends on where your husband will work or you, some people drive, some take the bus, the train and some the ferry,. you can have a 5 minute commute or an hour if you want. Living by the beach is more expensive and live far out west is cheaper but farther away.
we live in Manly, my husband works in Mascot by the airport, 30 minute drive at 615am, and over an hour if you leave at 730. But we can walk to the beach or the harbour side beaches in 5 minutes. Ferry to the city in 15-30 minutes so eveything is accessable.My son works in Balmain, he drive 45 minutes at 715 am
If you are transferring as an expat your company should provide you a relocation consulting service. there are a couple , australia wide and wendy cole & assoc. if so they will assign you a consultant who will organize house or apt inspections , school appointments, show you where the grocery store is and how to get all the utilities, bank stuff organised. one thing to get used to is a lot of the schools are boys or girls only and the kids have to wear uniforms. once you find a suburb then you can find a preschool.
