Hi,
The public school system is great in sydney. Like others have mentioned, depends on the area, but if you want to be near the Beach, try COOGEE, RANDWICK, MAROUBRA, CLOVELLY, BRONTE, WAVERLEY,they all have a larger village atmosphere and don't be suprised when you see 5 cafe's next to eachother and no seats available on Sat or Sun mornings. It's so different from the states. Here everyone hangs out in the parks, beaches and cafe's, very European.
Randwick Public School, Waverley Public School, Coogee Public School and Clovelly Public School are all great and have a great reputation. Pre Schools are very highly regulated and have to reach stringent yearly/bi yearly accreditations to stay in business, so I think you will be safe there. There are many in the vacinities I mentioned above, so you should be safe to know there will be one near where you work.
A lot of Large Corporations are now starting up daycares within their facilities to cater for Mothers returning to work, so if you can get one of those, it's a bonus.
Hope this helps a little, feel free to email me if you have further questions. christymac01@yahoo.com
Regards
Christine
You can also try the lower North Shore for beaches, but again it depends where you work.

: Google maps is a great way of seeing where
: everything is in Sydney. Parents on this
: site can give you a good guide on schools
: for the respective age of your kids.
: It will be more expeinsive but it is a
: bloody good place to live
: Cheers

: My husband, myself & our two kids will
: be
: moving to Sydney in November. Any
: recommnedations on nice neighborhoods? We
: want to be pretty close to the water. Also,
: do you recommend searching real estate
: websites or getting a realtor to find a
: place? I would prefer a house over an
: apartment building. We are aware that things
: are terribly expensive, but I am not sure
: where to start.
: Thanks,
: Cristina
