What age do kids start kindergarten / first grade

We are looking at moving to Sydney in October or November and I am trying to figure out what grade my son should be going into in Sydney. He will be turning 6 in April and in Wisconsin he will be starting all day 5 year old kindergarten in September. My bigger concern is returning to the states in 3 years I don't want him to struggle on the return so I would rather push him on the front end. What are children expected to know going into 1st grade as far as reading level, spelling, writing & math?
