I just finished! big recommendation--start now.
File your fiancee visa while you are in the US. I completed all the initial paperwork in the application and was surprised by the additional documents immediately requested upon submission of the application. the biggest pain in the butt was getting the state and FBI criminal background checks since I was already in Australia on the tourist visa. thus, file now while in the US so that the application process is smoother and faster.
if you happen to get married before the finacee visa is ready, no worries! that happened to us and the Australian Embassy in DC was quite helpful through the bureaucratic procedures of officially denying our finacee visa, offering us to apply for the spouse visa at no added fee, and then approving our spouse visa lickety split.
