If you do sign up for a phone contract in Australia, I wouldn't recommend Telstra. For a $50/month plan with them you'll get about $40 call credit/month.
With Vodafone or Optus $50/month plan will get you $300-$400 call credit/month. These tend to be 24 month contracts & you own the phone at the end.
It's also possible to buy a cell phone here for pretty cheap & then pre-pay some credit with no ongoing contract.
