My husband and I are permanent residents here in Australia and have been here for almost 3 months - hence we need to convert our US driver's license into a NSW one.
The problem is this... we have moved about 5 times in the last 3 years and hence can not provide a driver's license that is over 3 years old --- and will have to get a so will need to get a p1, p2, etc. etc learner's license and hence need to pay more in car insurance etc. An expense that is considerable.
I have contacted New Mexico and they can't fax the driving record overseas (when it was faxed in the US to someone we knew and forwarded to us and we gave it to the NSW motor registery they could not accept it because it wasn't faxed to them).
Then in Illinois - which we also have to get a record from - the process doesn't accept credit cards and needs to be mailed to us, etc. A huge mess that will probably take a month
I'm stuck. Has anyone had this problem? Was the consulate able to help?
Thanks!
Molly
