Hi Barb,
I am in another part of Sydney to you, but have had both my boys here. The support is excellent! When you have your baby in the hospital they will set you up with a first visit from the early childhood centre near your house (every suburb/area has one). The 'baby' nurse will come and visit you at home when you get back and help you with any questions you have.
After that you are supposed to go visit her every couple of weeks when your baby is young. They can help with things like breastfeeding questions/difficulties, solids, sleep (or lack of!), measuring and weighing, and they will tell you when the mother's group meets at the centre. It does feel a little strange to go along to a meeting of new moms that you don't know, but it is fun to swap stories with others in the same situation. All the babies in your group will be born all within a few weeks of each other, so you will be going through the same stuff at the same time.
I agree with the poster below - Australia really is a great place to have babies - so much free support!
Good luck - when are you due?
