We bought our house in North Sydney/Crows Nest and one of the reasons is because the public schools, on the Lower North Shore, are great. Try to be within easy access to your job as well. Traffic can be terrible. Public transport is generally reliable - busses, trains, trams, ferries.
Like I mentioned earlier, the Inner West is great as well. Each area has its own vibe. It depends what you are looking for... Eastern Suburbs are great, but a bit pricy (but then again you have the beaches, the cool cafes and bars). The inner West is a bit more edgy, but trendy (full of Sydney University students and cool ethic food and cafes). The lower north shore is family friendly and leafy. The further you are from the city the bigger the houses and plots of land - just like any city. Good luck.
