Jim, if you are teaching spanish speakers just tell then it doesn't have a translation or meaning in itself. It's useful when you ask a question or negate something. The verb "to be" can be moved to the begining of a sentence (is she a student?) we cannot do the same with the other verbs. We cannot say: live you in Barcelona? so we need a helper, that helper is the aux "do". Hope it helps.
