The difference is the length or duration of /i/.
chip has a short /i/ and cheap has a huge long one.
The Spanish /i/ is longer than the English short /i/ but shorter than the long one. This is why you find it difficult to hear the difference.
Many words in English are distinguished only by the length of the vowel sound.
