past continuous with "all day / week", "for a long time", "for nn hours'

I would like to find out whether it is good English to use Past Continuous in sentences like "Yesterday, I (was waiting) for you for a long time /all day / for three hours". Some non-native English teachers say we can't use past progressive with these time markers, others say it sounds good. If both Past Simple and Past Progressive can be used, could you explain the difference between these patterns.
Many thanks in advance.
Thank you for your site, it really helps me a lot.
