Because "time and tide waits for no man" and because the phrase "always enemy, always friend" does not apply to politics, the National League for Democracy and the State Peace and Development Council will in this new year commencing from this Independence Day strive to achieve a true and meaningful dialogue with new and fresh ideas and in all honesty and expeditiously. 2. That the National League for Democracy and the State Peace and Development Council can jointly resolve the many problems now facing the country. 3. That it is necessary for all citizens including all the nationalities and all political parties jointly and unitedly with one accord participate in disentangling the manifold political, economic and social difficulties of the country. 4. That the desire of the masses (inclusive of all ethnic nationalities and races) for a considerable number of years for an authentic uncorrupted democratic Union of Burma be established speedily. 5. That commencing from this prestigious independence day permission should be granted to all political parties to organize, publish, distribute and perform their political activities with a new and enlightened spirit. 6. That Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy be released from house arrest immediately. 7 That all political prisoners (including elected People's Hluttaw representatives) be unconditionally and immediately released. This is a resolution taken on this auspicious Independence Day, the 4th of January 2002.
