Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Kyaw Myaing on 2/27/2002, 9:58 pm Thanks for your information. For the general knowledge of all our readers, I want to write here what I know about the problem of narcotic drugs. It is a fact that the drug problem has been declared as a number one enemy in Myanmar. Although the present SPDC government is a military government, it has done its best to solve this problem in spite of the economic sanctions imposed on it my the US and other countries, plus the cutting of financial assistance from the World Bank and the IMF. In my opinion, there is full political will on the part of the SPDC to combat the problem of narcotic drugs. However, when the economy is weak, the government will not be able to spend as much money on this effort as it would wish. I therefore hope that the talks between the SPDC and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will soon move from the "confidence building" stage to more substantive issues. There are a million and one things that need to be done and the sooner the two sides can get agreement on the formation of a transitional coalition government, the better. When that happens, the US will be in a better mood to provide more assistance to Myanmar to combat the drug problem and the whole world will benefit from this situation. So the best thing for the US to do now is to create a favorable climate for the talks to succeed. In this way, we can see democratization in the near future. Once that is done, the new transitional coalition government will tackle the drug problem with the help of the international community, especially the US and its allies. This is my observation as an independent thinker. Regards and metta, Kyaw Myaing
