Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Michael on 3/2/2002, 12:59 pm I don't belive that the ASEAN countries have sanctions on Myanmar. It would seem logical that most of Myanmar's natural trade would be between ASEAN counties and nearby non-ASEAN countries. Much of the investment in Myanmar is from these countries, especially China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. Actually it seems almost to be a sort of an Asian imperalism directed against Myanmar, stripping the country of its teak, gems, gas, etc. Also the transformation of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand have been primarily due to the indigeneous Chinese. Look what is happening in Mandalay and along the old Burma Road into Yunnan. The Chinese are taking over Myanmar economically as they have the before-mentioned other countries. So if Myanmar wants to look like the other four countries economically, manage the economic aggressiveness of the Chinese toward national aims. How do sanctions effect this aspect of Myanmar economic development? So again, how do sanctions SIGNIFICANTLY effect the Myanmar economy vis-a-vis other factors? With Metta, Michael
I'm alittle confused as to the effect of sanctions on Myanmar.
Sanctions aren't effecting tourism, it the foreign pro-Daw Aung San Sui Kyi forces and the FEC/no visa on entry issues. The investment of the Western counties in Myanmar would not be great in any instance. The only real economic effect that I see on Myanmar from the sanctions has to do with grants and loans from the Western countries and global institutions of which they are members, such as the World Bank.
