Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Sphere on 3/4/2002, 11:22 am You are absolutely right about "Asian Imperialism" directed against Myanmar. The "Expansionist" Chinese is slowly taking over the whole of S-E Asia including Myanmar. The current leaders of Myanmar actually unwisely allow this to happen. Yes, the leaders give excuse because of US and Western World's sanctions they have to turn to China. In my view, why do they have to let this (sanction) happen. I personally think they (military) doesn't want to relinquish their powwer. That's why. Power comes first!. Then other things including country comes second. Myanmar "Yank" a lot about western cultures, influences, colonialist (1940s mentality), imperialist and so on. But she (Myanmar) overlook the real "new Imperialist" which is right next door to her. Pretty soon if this trend will continue Bamars, Shans, Kayins, Kachins etc will become a minority in the 22nd Century!. You said sanctions ain't effecting tourism?. If Myanmar is satisfied with "few" hundred thousands of tourist per year ofcourse it's not effecting. Compare to Thailand (no sanctions) which tourist comes in millions each year Myanmar leggs way behind her immediate neighbor. That's the proof of sanctions effects. If there are genuine "reforms" in the management and laws, especially Democratic rule of law, I'm definately sure western investment particularly US will greatly invest in Myanmar. Without grant and loans Myanmar will take 100years to be like let's say Singapore. If Myanmar choose that slow and dangerous road, o.k. fine. Who will suffer?. Not the world Bank. Myanmar will be the victim. Sincerity Sphere.
Good thinking Michael,
In short, Sanction is just like a tip of the iceberg. The underwater unseen effects will be enormous, humongous and immense in the long run!!!. Yyyeeesss Although it seems minimal on the surface, the unseen devastation will be great like Chinese take over for one.
