Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Michael on 3/4/2002, 6:29 pm Thanks for sharing your thoughts on sanctions with regard to my question and observations. While certainly Myanmar looks to such countries as China for loans and "friendship", I don't know if the sanctions pushed them that way to any major degree. The economic transformations of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore appear to have been due to the indigenous and outside Chinese, not the Western nations who are imposing sanctions on Myanmar. So one could maybe opin that the sanctions really had very little to do with the incursions of the Chinese into Myanmar; they would have been there anyway. Again, Sphere, thanks for your insightful comments. With Metta, Michael
Sphere,
While I agree with most of your points, I believe that most of the economic mess that Myanmar is in is due to their own making. They had economic problems before the sanctions were applied. During the non-sanction period, the other mentioned countries, e.g., Thailand, etc., were in an upward economic vector while Myanmar was experiencing stagnation. So I'm still at a loss to see how sanctions are having a significant economic effect on the country.
