Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Kyaw Myaing on 11/27/2002, 9:23 am This is the time for all of us to unite and ask ourselves: "what is the most important thing for our people and our country". In my view, the most important thing for all of us to bear in mind is the "welfare of the people". Without people, there can be no country, only a piece of barren land. If the HIV epedemic gets out of hand, there will be no people to live in the "promised land of democracy". Period. This is not a joke now, this is serious business and we should all think before we say things that affect the whole country. I have something to say to all activists who are working for democracy or a speedy transition to democracy. Sanctions will not work. Why? It just makes the people in power more hardheaded and angry. This is not want you want. What you want and what I want is a speedy and peaceful transition towards democracy. And please do not think that I am working for the SPDC. I will support whoever is on the right path. I am not attached to any political group or any personality as I am a free thinker. I have noticed that there are even some extreme radical groups in the "democratic opposition" who are trying to invovle the military might of the U.S. to solve Myanmar's internal problems. I want to put it on record that I do not support such moves as it will bring only untold suffering to the people of Myanmar. And all this unnecessarily. Here is an example of such an attitude: ""Sanctions Only Hurt Burmese Junta The South China morning Post today writes: "Yet, by focusing on their Economic privileges and security are what the SPDC will never let go. If the SPDC is decrying that "economic sanctions is economic In addition, why can't the military junta stop for a while and think To undo all these the only pressure that is left for international Politics is not that easy. If it were that easy, the Cuban politicians in Florida would have succeeded in involving the U.S. government to launch an invasion of Cuba a long time ago. The fact is that Castro is still there and no less a person than former President Jimmy Carter visited Havana to highligh the human problems there. There is a Burmese saying that I wish to bring up. "Let all die as long a Nga Tay is alive". If a person or a group of persons tries to destroy the country, the country's economy or the lives of many innocent lives of men, women and children, then the burden of this crime will lie with these people. This fact will be remembered by generations of Myanmars still to be born in our country. Now is the time to talk about practical ways to achieve a speedy and peaceful transition. This is not the time to bring up old wounds to seize the opportunity to settle old vendettas. In my view, there is only one path: Reconciliation, peace and development. So let us brings groups and parties together, and let us not try to fan the flames of hatred. The bottom line is this. There is a better way to achieve National Reconciliation than Economic Sanctions. Remember, any foreign power will only keep its national interest as top priority. Make sure that you do not unwittingly become the "baton" of a foreign power. Regards, Kyaw Myaing

The heart of the problem is none other than the fact that the Burmese
military institution is a "privileged class".

As for the populace, it is already very poor and it couldn't be darker

affecting the SPDC top brass and to a lesser extend, the military
