Come, let us reason together.
Posted by Kyaw Myaing Today I wish to discuss the topic of civility in a democracy. When we succeed and have a democratic government in place, there will be a need to teach the Myanmar people to have political debate with civility. The essence of a democratic society is to give the right to every citizen in the country to express his or her opinion without the fear of oppresion or reprisal. Very recently, I have noticed that the posting on the Ayezay web site promoting tourism to Myanmar has angered quite a number of democracy activists who are trying to destroy the Myanmar economy. I do not question their aspirations and goals, which are laudable. However, there is much to be said about their strategies, tactics and use of low language. I wish to give this message to one person who calls himself "anonymous" and does not wish to reveal himself. He finds pleasure in sending hate mail to me and likes to threaten me. This is very unfortunate. Maybe he does not know that I was retired from my post for taking part in the democracy demonstrations in 1988. Maybe he does not know that I too wish to see a democratic government established in Myanmar/Burma as soon as possible. I wish to say to him that no matter what type of bad language he uses, I can forgive him. It does not hurt me as I do not take it personally. I am practising the art of forgiveness and compassion. To be really ready for a democratic government in Myanmar/Burma, the Burmese people need to learn how to disagree with others who do not share the same opinion. If this is the level of culture and educational level of some of the people who claim to be working for democracy, I shudder at the thought of what it would be like to be under their rule. It is important to elect good leaders to rule our country. Those who are not courteous and not civil in their dealings with others have shown to the people their true nature. I know that the people of Myanmar/Burma are gentle, kind and courteous. These are the type of citizens we need for the future Myanmar. "Anonymous", whoever you are, I forgive you. May you have good health and a long life. May you become a good politician one day as I know that you love the country as much as I do. Regards and metta, Kyaw Myaing

Dear friends,
In fact I wish to see this person one day face to face so that we can sit down and have a fruitful dialogue.
I think such people are not fit to rule any where, not only in Myanmar.
I respect the leaders of the NLD and its leaders such as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo and U Aung Shwe. I believe their cause is just and that one day we will have a truly democratic government. However, I wish to point out to the Myanmar people to be on the look out for radical elements who are full of hate and revenge.
