I haven't contacted this website for ages - and it shows!
I knew Hilda quite well too. Strong lady but I got on well with her. She was kind enough to leave me WSL's writing desk (even though it was in a bit of a state). I collected it from Vanessa when Hilda passed away.
I know that WSL's diaries were sold to the maritime museam in Greenwich. Hilda said that WSL's American Civil War papers were being worked on at a University but I have a feeling that it was in Canada (I will try to look through my past correspondance with her).
It would be good to compare Family Trees (I only got back to Denny Near Stirling in 1758).
