for dragging calves around in branding (hence the name) they reduce stress on the shoulders. I mainly stick to this type or an old style martingale breastcollar because it doesn't crowd the shoulders so much and they fit a little better (especially on mules). I do prefer the ones that have a strap that goes over the neck
This one is fairly big for the appy, matched a different saddle I don't have anymore and I just generally don't like it. But it does fit my big mule 
I like my other one better, just a martingale style, had it made to match my saddle and they still screwed it up so it doesn't match quite right

This is what the billy cook looks like up close (mine is basketweave), it doesn't have as nice a contour to it as some of the custom ones and the straps have a "D" at the stop so you can loop them through the gullet where some others buckle around the gullet
