I'm going to get slammed for this

But I used to carry a crop in with me when I was dealing with a horse like that. If he tried to rush me, then he got a wack on the chest with the crop.

It only took a couple of times before he realized that I would win and he wouldn't get his food if he wasn't nice.

Be prepared to turn around a walk out (with his food) if he is being a butt head. He'll soon figure out that if he isn't nice, he won't get his treats.
