Wood breaks down. Eventually, you will be wanting to get rid of it. I put hardwood chips in my corral a few years ago. It was touted as excellent material for this purpose, and in fact, was designed for horse corrals. It WAS wonderful for about 3 years, but after that it began to break down, each year, and I ended up with a mess. I had a fellow come with a bobcat and he removed all the material and I replaced it with baserock. I would recommend for an arena readily available sand.
