I feed mine LMF Low Carb with 1 cup Oil....she gets a flake of alfalfa with it at night, a flake of grass hay with it in the morning... if she starts to lose weight I increase the oil - never the hay. (she's a Belgian/Qtr cross, 15.1hh a HUGE 15.1hh horse-muscle mass like you've never seen)
I don't know what good that will do for the scratches, but just as you said- drafts (as well as other horses but mainly the draft breeds) need to get their energy from FAT calories, NOT CARBS.
I was at Davis about 7 years ago and at the time they had 5 Clydes there that had scratches they were doing a study on... I don't know how/if you could contact them, but the study was pretty comprehensive from what they were telling me.
