Flying lead changes are not for a young horse. The horse must know how to carry itself, be on the aids, balanced and supple. I may be wrong however flying lead changes are first introduced at 3rd level dressage tests.
For simple lead changes if she doe not change or keeps on switching the lead, “aggresiveness or spurs” is absolutely NOT the answer. She may not be ready yet (i.e. not strong enough yet, not balanced, not straight, not supple..) or there can be a pain issue associate with ill fitting tack, improper riding or injuries (acute or chronic).
Have an exam done on the horse and the tack and if that shows no issues ask a good trainer.
“..wack her with a crop when she doesnt get the hind end of the change” is NOT a sound advise either. If your teacher wacked you with a crop when you were trying to write with the left hand (giving you are right handed) and it was not as pretty, do you think that would have solved the problem???
A young horse needs correct guidance and proper encouragement, NOT punishment. It is not the horse’s fault if you cannot explain correctly what you want or if your riding/tack causes pain to the horse. Do not know your horse however the probability she is changing leads freely and correctly without a rider when running on her own is extremely high (if not, there is an injury issue).
