I prefer true and counter canter serpentines until horse is balanced in them without getting slower or faster.
Never ask in corner or over a pole when first trying lead changes.
TEACHING most horses is so easy as they do them in turn out and it is just asking them on command with their understanding what your queues are, now others are tough as you can see some of these horses on one lead in front and one in back in turn out and they never get one even loose.
Often though poor rider position or sore horses will make this very frustrating and often the number one thing I see of riders changing only the bend in the neck and not the body of the horse forcing the horse out of balance
