
Posted by LoganHorse My trainer set up a neat exercise that helps horses learn to change leads. Set up three poles on the ground about 8 feet apart, like canter poles(some sources say 8-10 feet, depending on your horse's stride). Put a standard on each side of the middle pole so you can raise it into a small jump if the poles don't work by themselves. Canter through it and ask for a lead change over the middle pole/small jump. Remember that lead changes come from the hind end; pulling the front end over or forcing the lead by circling doesn't work. If your horse doesn't get the lead, do a simple change and try again. Keep it quiet and soft, the best lead changes come from a calm horse who is balanced and working from his hind end.

I think the horse should be able to do simple changes with no more than three steps of trot before trying for flying changes.
