I've yet to see one that didn't become substantially thinner from being kept braided or in a bag. take a look at wild horses. they have the thick manes and tails everyone envys and they don't get any care.
I deal with my horses the same way. manes and tails are not brushed or messed with except for a special event. then a good shampoo, well rinsed and they are luxurient! cowboy magic if the dreadlocks start.
far too much time is expended on brushing and grooming that horses don't need. let them roll and be horses. feed them good. clean 'em up to go to town. otherwise leave them alone.
