Go ahead and use the fly sheets. If you're worried about overheating, then try the soft mesh sheets and not the vinyl-like ones. As long you're able to check your horse every day and see whether the sheet is making him overheat or not. I would love to be able to use a sheet on my mare but she's out on a very large section of land and I don't see her every day. And the babies out in the same field have already learned that fly masks are fun to take off so I can imagine what they would do to a fly sheet.
My friend feeds her horses garlic, works for the two horses they have. I've heard it works on some and other times it doesn't affect the bugs at all.
