It's not the end of the world. I beleive the first horse's name was "Impressive". He had that name because he was VERY muscular. A beautiful animal. A trait that is common in HYPP horses. He was such a great looking quarter horse that his semen was shipped all over the place and before long his bloodlines were evrywhere. It was later found that "Impressive" had a genetic disorder.
My sister-in-law owns an Impressived bred horse that was tested by UC Davis when we purchased him. He tested positive. We wouldn't sell that horse for a million dollars.
It's true that your horse may have very serious episodes. It's also true that your horse may never be effected at all. UC Davis has all the info on HYPP. They've been working with it for years. And if every quarter horse on the planet was tested, I bet there would be thousand of very surprised owners.
