some are good and some not so. I acquired a group of horses a few years back, all of whom may have been HYPP NH, NN, or PP. The previous individual whose care they were in told the owners they were all (7 of them) HYPP positive as they had all seized within a few days of each other. I took it upon myself to have them all tested as they came to me to be sold. 4 were NN and 3 were NH. The DNA testing results along with the UC Davis "fact sheet" were attached to the Bills of Sale. I kept the 3 NH horses, and subsequently sold one to gal who had known her as a foal. In that contract, I included a paragraph regarding the mare's NH status, and included the DNA test results and fact sheet.
That mare has subsequently died. I don't know if it was stress from an environment and feed change or if the owners tried to push her too much and that stressed her - she was asymptomatic with me. Additionally, this mare came to me with a foal by her side (I had issues with that as the mare was 3 when bred). That foal was NH and regularly symptomatic (didn't help that she never got enough to eat as a baby - but that's a whole other irritating story) and subsequently died when she twisted a gut. As indicated, she had health issues in addition to her HYPP NH status.
No, I am not smarter than a 5th grader, but occasionally I am smarter than a 1st grader.
