I had a gelding that I had for years that was N/H for HYPP. I had him in training for about 6 months then I ended up buying him from the owner. From what I know they all react differently. With my guy, his diet was grass or oat hay and LMF. We did everything with that horse-you could ride him as hard as you could and never see him "fit". For some reason the only way he would "fit" would be if I left his blanket on him too long and he would sweat. His skin would twitch in his shoulders and belly area for about 15 minutes then it would disappear. If you wearen't paying close attention you'd miss it. In fact, for the six years I had him, my husband never once saw him do it. In my case, it was so mild it never interfered with what we needed him for. He did everything from shows, trail rides, rope horse even pony horse down at the track. In my opinion, there are a lot worse issues to manage. With the right diet and exercise I never gave the HYPP another thought. With your guy at home-you would probably would need to see if he would "fit" just to see the reaction to determine if he'll even do it. If it's mild and you can manage it, it certainely wouldn't stop me. If it's more severe than that then you would have to consider other options.
