is actually quite inexpensive and comes in very handy in these situations. For me, I can't imagine NOT getting available diagnostics as long as they are not invasive. We owe it to our horses.
We all have our different limitations, but I guess I would think that if I commit to having a horse, I need to commit to providing basic medical care. I don't actually see the situation you describe above as either unusual or unreasonable.
