Equioxx actually is an NSAID, just not as irritating to the kidneys and GI tract as Bute. It is a COX2 specific NSAID that more specifically targets pain/inflammation while mostly sparing COX1 which are involved in renal blood flow, GI mucosa, etc. Bute and the other NSAIDS available for horses are non specific COX1/COX2 hence why they are more likely to cause problems.
It is a great drug though! Can provide a lot of relief for our friends, but can be $$. I don't think they've done any safety studies past 14d in horses though. Dogs have been studied for longer periods without problem though.
