I would ask your vet to make the call. That way they can explain exactly what has been done and why putting her down is the best option. I once went to UCD with a friend with an older mare. She was getting dangerous to handle was older had bad hocks and when she tried to retire her became nasty and bullied other horses. She was clearly not happy. I went with her and the owner could not handle staying with the horse so I stayed with the horse through the whole thing as i believe they deserve to have someone with them at the end. I was very upset by the student who tried to talk us out of having the mare put down and asked whether we had considered retirement turning the horse out to pasture etc etc. We had done all these things. i appreciated she was doing her job but I didn't appreciate that it was making a tough situation worse. So I would make sure they know ahead of time that you have exhausted all options and this is the best solution.
I have a friend who donated her horse for research last year. He needed to be put down due to a sudden respiratory condition that resulted in a fatal pneumonia.
I have good connections at UCD. If there is anything I can do for you please don't hesitate to email me I am happy to do anything i can. I have been in your situation more than once. I am even happy to be there when you get there if the timing worked out. Just let me know.
Peace and hugs to you and your mare.
