I donated a mare who had DSLD with an agreement that she be euthanized. She was actually thrilled to walk off the trailer into a stall full of alfalfa, gave us that gee why did you wait so long to bring me here, thanks, bye. But with most reasearch institutions UCD (CSU here) do make sure you stipulate that the horse will be humanely euthanized, unfortunately many reasearch horses get dumped at auction when the research is done. I owned one CSU dumped, watched 10 of his pals go to the meat man that were sound and healthy. A crippled horse doesn't have much of a chance at a sale barn.
Also as a poster above said, donations of horses are very helpful from a learning perspective, did another terminal surgery on a different horse with DSLD and it was a very dignified and peaceful end but so valuable for the students
