if you decide to euthanize, it's always possible to send a horse to Davis for a necropsy. I did both of my old guys, even though it cost some money, but I wanted to help my vet, UC Davis, and myself learn from their passing.
I don't know if you can request specific attention on the lameness though. Your vet may be able to provide you more info on this option...
