Depending on the time of the year and how much rain we get usually a rain sheet is sufficient unless you have a high maintenance horse that has thin skin or hard to keep weight on. I see so many "poor" horses at my pasture that get stuck with well intention blankets on after storms and it gets back up into the 50-60's during the day and the horse roasts in their blanket. I would opt for no-fill rain sheet jmho unless your horse is body clipped or it doesn't get over 55 degrees or is just pouring for more than a day then I find even my best rain sheets get soaked and I have to switch out blankets
