whether you clip or not.
My retiree only gets a rain sheet for the worst of the winter weather (usually mid dec - feb). He has a heavy coat.
My mare is in full work and clipped. Right now she has on a rain sheet, I'll move her up to a mid-weight rain sheet for the worst of the winter. Never more than that.
