Just get a bale bag. They make moving and storing bales so easy! I personally would use Camp-Dry to waterproof the bag just in case, if you're keeping it outside.
Don't buy the cheapo ones - they're often too small to cover a west coast bale, and fall apart quickly. I have this one, made by Hold Your Horses, and it's very sturdy:

You could also just wrap it in a tarp but that's annoying to deal with on a daily basis.
