I bought one for this purpose and was sadly disappointed. The listed dimensions on the box imply a bale would fit but the sides of the bin are rounded/tapered so the dimensions are misleading. Hay bales are a little too wide to stick in one way, and if you stick them in the other way then the lid won't close. Once a few flakes are eaten, then the rest of the bale will fit. I've seen people tarp the open lid until the few flakes are gone. What I did was remove a few flakes and stored them in a muck-bucket in my tack closet and used them first.
Now I have a larger container that actually fits 2 bales and use the "bench" one for equipment storage. This is fine since I don't board at the fancy barn with personal tack closets anymore.
