I would not buy a horse that I knew was n/h. And I would NEVER breed one.
I agree that AQHA shouldn't allow registrations. There are many, many horror stories that I've heard over the years of "non-symptomatic" horses suddenly going down- some dying on the spot. Some severely injuring riders. Always traumatizing to the people around.
I am lucky enough to have never witnessed an attack and I hope I never do... The ONLY way I'd ever have an n/h horse is if it were a "rescue" type of situation: I would have to have extra space for the horse to be basically a pasture pet, 24 hour pasture (no stalls or small paddocks) and have the extra spendin' cash for vet bills and supplements... and rendering eventually.
I have worked with and loved quite a few n/h horses, but never would I purposely sentence another horse with the disease by breeding one. I can't imagine a much worse fate for either the horse or owner than those episodes and the possibility of watching them die like that. Too sad.
