I think when a horse is moving off his hinney and not pounding on those front quarters it makes for a much smoother ride. Some horses need a lot of help learning how to rebalance themselves others are born with the ability to do that. I think a lot of it comes with breeding as well.
I had a TB who had the smoothest trot I have ever ridden, but his canter was work. I have a Paint now who has a terrible trot, but his canter is very comfortable. We are working to improve the trot, but it takes a long time. It's like training for a ballerina or a athelete. It doesn't come over night if you are not born with it.
