It really is operator dependent. I just had 6 done by hand and didn't use much sedation at all except the one that would have required much more had it been a power float. I saw a lot more blood on the previous float, (which was a power float done by a well respected dentist). The good dentists shield with fingers when needed and use floats designed for each tooth and don't try to sweep over the entire arcade at once, this is in contrast to the old floats with only one or two blade and handle shapes. With those it is hard to get precision. The newer hand floats are much easier to use. The whole procedure took less time than the previous dentist with the power tools and the horses recovered fine.
I think there is a lot of variability in skill level. With a bad power float, there is a lot more to go wrong in a short time with a bad operator.
It is possible to do a good job with power tools, but I'm going to stick to the hand float and someone that really knows how to ballance a mouth.
