We had a friend's 20+ year old gelding who had always had a trot like a sewing machine. Put a saddle that let him move his shoulder back and forth vs. up and down and his trot immediatley changed. Same saddle for my mustang and he relaxed, head went down, blew, and trot got long and fluid instead of short and choppy.
I think there are few saddles that allow horses to really move their shoulder the way they need to.
