You want to get samples from at least 10-15 bales from different parts of the stack. It's kind of messy to open that many bales and grab samples from inside the bales
. If you take a "grab sample" it also needs to be cut into very small pieces with stainless steel scissors. I have done this and it is time consuming, but doable. A few months back I received a box of loose hay from one of my customers in Poland to have tested. She doesn't have a hay probe, so I sat down and cut up her hay sample before sending it to the lab.
You may be able to borrow a hay probe from your local ag extension office. Some hay growers will core a sample for you. That is how I used to do it before I bought my own probe.
