You can buy a Penn State hay probe from Equi-Analytical for $120, which includes a FREE forage analysis, so that brings your price for the probe down to under $100.00 
I agree that price plays a part here, but after trying to core hay with an improvised probe, I gladly paid for the Penn State probe and have received more than my money's worth out of it Again, check with your local ag extension office to see if they have one you can borrow.
