the gravel, trust me it's a huge mess. Put pallets down on top of the gravel. I did gravel in my hay barn and HATE IT, I lose so much hay as it works it's way down into the gravel unless you rake daily, also ground even though it stays dry, if you have say a 3 sided hay barn (like mine) wind blows rain in and the gravel is always damp, so your bottom bales will mold. I wouldn't use sand anywhere near the horse will be eating, way out in the paddock is ok if you do not feed near it as they could ingest it. Pea gravel is nice and soft, but you have to watch that they don't work their way into the hoof. I use DG and keep it worked up in the turnout areas.
