A horse should never be in side reins in a eurociser unsupervised. That is insanely unsafe and no dressage rider that I know would do such a thing.
Like all disciplines, dressage has good and bad. It's not bad to be at a fancy facility (many times I wish my barn was a bit nicer!), it makes me sad that people have such stereo types about dressage people. Most of us are just working away, trying to learn.
I may not take my horse on the trails as often as others, but I assure you that I don't drill my horse either.
