and people generalize about all kinds of things they do to Walkers. I would never do anything like it and nobody I know would do it, but it does happen... probably the same for you and dressage. I used to show dressage a long time ago and the people I rode with did not do that stuff, but it does happen....as you say, there are good and bad... And before that when I showed on the AQHA circuit there were people doing horrible stuff to the horses in the name of winning... I didn't and the people I hung out with did not, but it happened.... I think the point is in every equine discipline, there are people who do things that aren't very nice in order to win... it's not a generalization about dressage people it's a generalization about people that are more interested in ribbons than that welfare of the horse.....
and the endless drilling applies to any discipline as well...
For me, trail riding works, doesn't have to be the same for everyone..... some people don't have the opportunity for it, others don't like it or don't feel safe....no big deal...you can still ride your horse without overdrilling, which sounds like your approach. That's great! I don't equate all arena riding to being overdrilled, but I certainly have seen a lot of overdrilling in my life....
